What the program is
My Safe Florida Home is a state program that helps homeowners make their homes stronger against hurricanes. It has two parts:
- A free wind mitigation inspection by a state-approved inspector. The report shows your home's weak spots and which upgrades could lower your insurance premium.
- A matching grant of up to $10,000 for recommended upgrades, for homeowners who qualify.
Roof upgrades the grant can help pay for
Many of the improvements the program covers are roof work:
- Roof deck attachment: re-nailing the plywood deck with the right nails and spacing so it stays on in high winds.
- Secondary water resistance: a sealed roof deck, so water stays out even if the roof covering is damaged.
- Roof-to-wall connections: hurricane clips or straps that tie the roof framing to the walls.
- Roof covering that meets current code, when the program approves it as part of the upgrades.
Windows, doors and garage doors can also be covered. Your inspection report decides which upgrades are recommended for your home.
Who qualifies (as of 2026)
Based on the program's current rules, homeowners generally need:
- A site-built, single-family home that is your homesteaded primary residence. Mobile and manufactured homes aren't eligible.
- A home built, or permitted, before January 1, 2008.
- An insured value of $700,000 or less, and active homeowners insurance.
- A completed My Safe Florida Home inspection that recommends improvements.
Recent funding rounds have been limited to low- and moderate-income households, based on your county's median income. Check the official site to confirm the rules for the current round.
How much the state pays
- Low-income homeowners: the grant can cover eligible work up to $10,000 with no match required.
- Other eligible homeowners: the state generally pays $2 for every $1 you pay, up to $10,000 from the state. For example, $15,000 of approved work could mean up to $10,000 from the state and $5,000 from you.
How to apply
- Create an account and apply for the free inspection at mysafeflhome.com.
- A state-approved inspector visits your home and you get a wind mitigation report.
- If upgrades are recommended, apply for the grant when funding is open.
- After approval, hire a licensed contractor for the approved work, following the program's rules.
- The work is completed and inspected, and you send the new wind mitigation report to your insurance company for discounts.
Don't start the work before your grant is approved. Work done early may not qualify.
How Big Al's can help
We're a Florida Certified Roofing Contractor (#CCC1330874) working in the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone every day. If your inspection report recommends roof upgrades, we can look at your roof, explain the work in plain English and give you a written, line-item quote. When we replace a roof, we re-nail the deck to current code and can install secondary water resistance, two of the upgrades the program looks for. Grant approvals and payments are handled by the program, not by us.
